TNL18
Sliding headstock automatic lathe with a diameter of up to 20 mm for turning with and without a guide bush.

- Simultaneous machining with up to 3 tools possible
- Easy change-over for turning operation with and without a guide bush
- Clearly structured working area with large axis travels
- Turret indexing using an NC rotary axis
- Very large pool of fixed and driven tools by using double and triple holders
- 3-axis grasping with counter spindle
- Excellent accessibility for operation and maintenance due to large sliding door
- Compact design at minimum footprint
Kinematics

The TNL18 has 7 linear axes.
Both tool carriers have large X/Y/Z-axis travels. The tool carriers are a highlight of the machine design because the rotary motion is executed by an NC axis without any mechanical locks. This allows to position both turrets very fast at any angle. The counter spindle with integrated lower turret positions on 3 axes resulting in ultimate transfer accuracy.
The vertical machine bed design guarantees a favorable chip flow.
Enhanced kinematics with 9 axes
A counter spindle identical to the main spindle is mounted on an X-Z cross-slide, providing a Z travel range of 262 mm. The enhanced machine concept of the TNL18 has thus an autonomous counter spindle and 9 NC axes.
The work area with 7 axes

The working area of the TNL18 is easily accessed by the user through its noticeably high and wide sliding door. It is clearly structured by the components: Main Spindle, Upper Tool Carrier, Counter Spindle with Lower Tool Carrier and Rear End Machining Unit.
The main spindle of the TNL18 has a highly dynamic motor spindle in synchronous design and fast acting C-axis positioning. The smart headstock design with large Z-axis travel allows the turning operation both with and without a guide bush. The upper tool carrier has 8 tool stations with powerful tool drive and internal coolant. The upper turret of the enhanced TNL18 has compared to the P variant all 3 axes X/Y/Z. This independent Z-axis enables applications like thread chasing without material return or deep hole drilling simultaneously to backworking without workpiece retraction into guide bush. The tooling circle corresponds to remarkable 1225 mm of Y-travel unwrapped, beating any linear tool carrier. The TNL18 has a powerful counter spindle with large X/Y/Z axis travels and integrated tool carrier with 7 stations. Each station can be equipped with multiple holders thus leading to a large pool of tools. 7 stations at the rear end machining unit, 4 four of those with internal coolant, enable complex backworking at the workpiece.
The work area with additional B-axis

The TNL18-7 model now comes with an extra B-axis, thus expanding its application spectrum to handle particularly challenging machining tasks. With the additional B-axis in the upper tool carrier, which can pivot by 100°, highly complex parts and complicated contour elements can be machined that also require additional operations such as milling, drilling, lateral drilling or transversal threading at any preferred angular position. For parallel main spindle operations, angled tool holders were necessary so far with "normal" turret positioning – now the turret simply pivots.
The work area with 9 axes and autonomous counter spindle

In this design the counter spindle is mounted on a separate cross-slide with X- and Y-axes. Rear end machining is carried out by one of the two X/Y/Z turrets. The two tool carriers can be used both on the main spindle and counter spindle. This further development extends the machining spectrum to workpieces with lengths over 200 mm, which can be removed afterwards through the counter spindle and placed onto a conveyor belt.
Two tools are used independently on the main or counter spindle. This allows in addition to turning operations also complex milling contours, off-center, axially parallel drilling The additional X-axis of the counter spindle provides ample free space for simultaneous internal machining on the main and counter spindles.
